hi m a student doing internship in india and need to do a clerkship,so am putting a week of my internship on hold so that my student status is preserved and finishing step1 and  then applying for clerkship,do you think it's feasible to do that,as i want to do clerkship in a recognised institution which invariably require step1 scores.do u think it's a good idea??

It depends on the period of internship u r in now.. If you are about to get it completed like in the 11th month or the 12th you don't have any other way than leaving off ur internship. Not all universities ask step1.. almost half of the universities do not need step1 indeed.. If you are writing step1 only for clerkships.. Think twice before you do it coz even if you dun have a clerkship and if you have good scores its gonna take you to a good height.. but if you loose ur score coz of writing it early ur gonna loose even if you do many clerkships..

so, leave a week... do not write step1.. apply ASAP

Dear Umar,

im a fourth year medical student at AKU applying for clinical electives for final tear.

i just wanted to let u no that from the above mentioned list most ask for J1/F1, it would perhaps be easier if you could divide the list cording to the visa require.

i mus add ur site is extremely helpful, and that a lot of my queries were answered through it.

god bless you

Thanks a lot for your kind words. Well I am quite busy these days; preparing for step 1.     If you could arrange the universities according to the visa requirements, I would be more than happy to publish it with your name as author.

hello

sir i need ur guidance

i am a medical school graduate from india i have finished my step 1 an step 2 cs...(on b1/b2) am preparing for ck exam which i plan to give in august ...and hopefully apply in september

since i have not done any clerkship or observership yet ,i would like to apply for some research or observership in sept and oct...i dont know which is more useful and how easy it is to get into it please help me figure tht out

and also how woulld i know which universities/ hospitals have research openings?

need ur help

thanks

I am not aware of any research opening spots... you cannot apply for clerkships/ electives as you are a graduate... externships are best... 2nd is a research spot and observerships after that... but keep in mind the most important thing is strong recommendation irrespective of you get it from externship, elective, research or observership....

this is my 1st post on this site and firstly i will thanks the great umar bhai  for his helping hand to others in his such a busy schedule and time.

i m answering it all on behalf of umar bhai as he is busy preparing for step 1

dear tina regarding mt. sinai , i have also enquired from them regarding toeffl , they replied me back that----since your medical school is in English I would weave it, but I’m hoping that you’ll be able to communicate well in English and take notes etc.

they mail back  only 6 weeks prior to the start date of your elective.

god bless u the great umar bhai.. and may god fulfill all u r dreams...

thanks 4 replying.. i called them they said i can fax them my toefl scores. but i ve not given it yet. n d exam is on 24th n result will come after 12-15 days.so whole process will take a month. what if in the mean time they reject my application?

u asked 4m whom? i called student affairs office. r u really sure they can waive it off?

@ sandeep

thanks a lot 4 helping.. tom i ll talk to them again.. plz clear my doubt about writing the expected graduation date.. my internship will end on 31 dec 2010 n the same date is written on my transcript. so if m going 4 elective in dec n  jan so 1 month dec will b pending. should i get the date on my transcript changed to 28 feb 2011?

dear tina,

if u want to do any elective after 31dec, u have to change the date on u r trancript , means u can do the elective only before your graduation date( before you are graduated) and not after u r graduated .

plz, do not forget to post what they said , if u have called them

Nevertheless i m answering it to the best of my knowledge, and  will request the great umar bhai , to plz correct me if i m wrong.

hello umar bhai,

I'm a resident of India currently doing my internship

I am planning for electives at weill cornell medical college.I want to opt for Clinical Gastroenterology/Nephrogy for the electives but the maximum no. of students accepted in each is 2, same is the case for many other branches. I've qualified my M.B.B.S WITH honors in many subjects inc. medicine. Is there any scope of my application being accepted despite the limited availability? if no what other choices shud I go for?  Please help

hi, honestly speaking this is only a luck game... if there has been not so many applicants for the same specialty during the same time... u have a great chance otherwise you have to face the competition... there is no other hard and fast rule...

i find many hospitals under suny downstate . I find i am allowed to do electives only in peds , emergency med ,etc.

suppose i would like to give emergency med as my first choice , and under that many different titles an code no electives are there based on which hospital it comes under . so ,  should i choose the hospital based electives code no.

or should i just fill in emergency medicine  , and they will give me after acceptence  which hospital i m supposed to apply to. in that case , i have to leave the code no. blank inthe application.

2) should i pay money for infection control certificate for suny .  this is the link

SOME ONE PLEASE CLARIFY THIS  riten on the Unv of texas medical branch elctive page ..this is the only uiversity saying this?

umer  bhai how come  the yr saying this?

Student must be in good standing and in the final year of medical school (on a basis equivalent to the UTMB curriculum).  If you attended a school that requires that you complete an "internship year" or "training period" after the completion of your curriculum, but prior to your degree being awarded, you cannot attend UTMB as a visiting student during that "internship year" or "training period".  In that case, your final year would be considered the year prior to that training period.

does this mean students from INDIA and pakistan arent eligible  after final mbbs?

It means that med students from India are not eligible to apply... however Indian med students can go there in their 2nd last year... what do you call it? 4th year or 5th year?

In Pakistan, internship year is after graduation... so in a way we are awarded degree before internship year... so all Pakistani med students can definitely apply...

Hi, I want to know if anyone knows in which semester is it better to apply for a clerkship, is it the first semester of the year or the second? or it doesnt make a difference....thanks for your help!

I deleted your other comment because it was a duplicate. The summer months such as June through August are typically times when American students rotate so competition for places might be more than normal, but the rest of the year is peaceful. Infact people do get accepted even in summer months so there's really no "better" time period for applying in a year. Such favourable time periods are typically defined by the institution itself.

Hi, this is my first time in this great helpful website my question is, if anyone has done surgery elective in USA before ? what is your recommendation for best universities or hospitals in USA not by their names but in their teaching quality. A lot of huge names and ranking among USA but when you in the elective they're not good teachers or they don't have the teaching desire. so, any one has done Good surgery elective before and he recommend it ? P.S: I'm IMG Thank you in Advance.

Hello. I'm a fourth yr medical student in Pakistan. I want to apply for clinical elective in Internal medicine(specialty within it e.g. gastro or cardio), since thats what I want to do my residency in.

Northwestern Univ(initially my first choice) offers Internal Medicine to only LCME accredited college, while allowing International students to apply in other areas(e.g. Emergency medicine, surgery, neuro, paeds etc). However, someone told me that doing a clinical elective in an area in which you dont want to do your residency in counts against you when you apply for residency. Is this true...if so then should I not apply to Northwestern at all or should I choose emergency medicine?

Thanks

1)East Carolina University

2)University of Michigan Medical School

3)Pennsylvania

4)University of Tennessee Health Sciences center

5)University of Washington School of Medicine

6)Georgetown University School of Medicine

I think with the following additions this site is now truly complete to help out all the International students with their electives.

All the best to everyone for their future endeavours

University of Pennsylvania only offers clinical electives to those international students who are studying in a University that has an affiliation with it.

No candidate from Pakistan is eligible

From India only students studying in AIMS (Link below)

Hello. In an application for clinical elective(at Mount Sinai) theres a portion thats supposed to be filled out by the dean that ask if the student will be covered by malpractice and health insurance by the college. What should one tick there(yes or no)? ;a senior at my college who went to mount sinai said tick no(since our college doesnt actually cover it...we have to do it ourselves), but another friend of mine said tick yes, since they wont know and it will increase our chances of getting in.

Dear Umar Bhai,

I am a 4th medical student.  I am planning to apply for clinical electives at Henry Ford Hospital. There are few things which im not sure about:

1- they ask us to fax the application, for acceptance. what about the rest of the docs? do v have to mail them or fax them?

2- iv heard that v have to first contact a doctor with whom v wud b doing the electives. is it obligatory? if so, how can i contact them? coz i cant find email ids of the respective doctors.

please help me. i would be really obliged

dude..if u r applying at hery ford for electives for 2010-11, then pls abandon ur efforts.. i managed 2 sponsors both of whom forwarded their interest to the UGME co-ordinator at Henry Ford. I flatly got rejections on the reason that the seats wer already full and there was increased demand from local medical students..

as far as applicatn form is concerned, i did not reach that stage of faxing or mailin! the e-mail ids pathway given on many USMLE forums across the net. Umar bhai had also put 1 up but the link doesn seem 2 work..

Umar bhai plz guide me

i am a medical student from the university of science and technology, sanaa, yemen, and i just finished my 6th year;and now i have a year of clerkship ahead of me,but i preferd to do it in the U.S,,since thats where my family is,i currently just arrived in the U.S for vacation,,i thought of starting to make calls to various hospitals regarding clerkships for foreign medical students,,many of the hospitals require step1,which i dont have,or require u to be a non-U.S citizen,,,i currently have reached a point where i feel like cutting my treanscripts,,nothing good seems to be blowin towards me,i was talkin to a friend of mine about the difference between our studyin and theres, and when i referred to my clerkships,,he said hes done them in his 3-4th year,,apparently his ''clerkships'' are like our rotations,,if so y do we have to do clerkships?..

anyways man im doing my best in calling hospitals if you can provide me with anything that could help, please do,,your help in this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Most of the universities dont offer "clerkships(3rd year rotations)"... you can only apply for "electives(4th year rotations)" and that too to only those places who allow foreign medical students to apply for it!

Hello there!

i must say that you're doing an amazing job through this web portal.

I have a simple questions...as far as i know we cannot do clinical electives until we are in the final year of our medical school...how do then people manage to go for electives during their 3rd and 4th years out of a five year program when most universities have a necessary requirement for an application to be in his/her final year before applying?

Thank you and God bless you!

good job on the list. but as pointed out it needs to be updated.. few have stopped accepting intl. students only.

also, what i wanted to ask u all is there ne specific place u should do your elective from??

lot of ppl. say do it from places which give a LOR or accept IMGs into their program. that seems to be tru but how do we find that?

ne particular recommendations by ne1 which is a good place to do your elective from where u hve a high chance of getting accepted later or getting a good LOR??

can you please update this list because many of the schools listed are not accepting IMG's for electives such as Baylor which says no more international visiting students

thanks

hey umar bhai...

First of all, i have to say your site is too good n answers all questions to the point! I'm presently doing my internship in India and I have a few questions about doing an elective in University of toronto.

1. Would an elective in Internal Medicine in University of Toronto be valid for a US residency programmes?

2. Would having a Permanent resident card of Canada help in any way?

Thank you so much for your time :)

hi umar bhai... First of all, i have to say that your site is too good n answers all questions to the point! I congratulate you for your kind effort. I'm presently doing my internship in India and I have a question about doing an elective in University of toronto. 1. Would an elective in Internal Medicine in University of Toronto be valid for a US residency programmes? I came to know from its website that it accepts applications from august 10th.So kindly suggest me what to do. I took all the required recommendation letters, Immunization forms and other letters from my medical school office as listed in your website.I am ready to apply now.

Hi vamshi......I did my research on this last year and I found out that it will not be considered equal to elective in USA....although it will be a good exposure...so it's entirely upto you if you want to go or not....

First of all thanks a lot for such a resourceful website...

I have been accepted to rotate at NWU for peds hem/onc from 23 april 2012 to 18 may 2012. I do not have any other electives a s of now

I can apply to cornell for an elective from 28th may..but i am confused. They started accepting applications for this year from April 2011 itself and I am applying only 7 months in advance whereas ^ months before is their deadline. Its a 200 dollar application.. should I risk it and apply anyway? are my chances good enough?

Also does someone know what yale means when they say you are not allowed to re apply if you are rejected...we can not even re apply for a later date if the reason for rejection was non availability of space?

Hi Medisid,

I will be doing a Sickle Cell Anemia rotation at NIH in Jan 2012. I wanted to ask for your guidance  as to how to go about it.

Will I be able to participate in a research project simultaneously?

What should I read? how should I prepare? Did you get an LOR from there?

Could you please give me your mail ID for further queries?

Regards,

Abhishek

 Assalamualaikum umar bhai,

I am truly sorry for troubling you with this question despite your busy schedule but I really need your opinion and help here. I just received an email from Mount Sinai regarding my elective application. I got accepted into their elective program in Bronx Vateran Hospital for Clinical Surgery. However, I am really interested in going for the main site for the elective and I read that the elective program in Bronx Va is not that good. Is it true umar bhai? Further more, bronx is about 40mins one way from NYC. Is it possible for me to change my elective location? Do you have any advice for me umar bhai? Should I just accept this offer? Thank you so much for you help. I am sorry for any incovenience caused.

Regards,
Radzi Hamzah
