Sometimes the residence during electives is provided by the university itself but if it is not provided or its too expensive you can try the first three for a longer stay(in months) and the last one for a short-term stay(in days to weeks).
- Craigslist is most helpful. Try to find places that fit in your price range. Avoid paying any huge amount for security and always get a written contract regarding the number of days to be stayed along with receipt of any payment made. Avoid making any direct payment; always use checks/ cheques which you can use as proof, just in case someone tries to fraud. Try to make advance payment of all utilities rather than waiting till you leave. Most landlords are nice but some might try to rip you off.
- Keep in mind that the residence you find in HostelWorld is a shared one, its a dormitory usually. If you dont know what a dormitory is, kindly read what wikepedia says "Dormitory typically refers in the United States to residence halls, which are sleeping quarters or entire buildings primarily providing sleeping and residential quarters for large numbers of people, often boarding school, college or university students".
- If you are comfortable with few people around, then you can find really cheap residence in HostelWorld ranging from 12-35 $ per day, depending upon the location and the type of dormitory. Moreover you dont need to make complete payment for reservation, they reserve your room at an advance payment of 25 % of the total.

Dear Sir.

The on-campus housing mentioned by the university is really really expensive, around $ 1000 a month and that's far too expensive for me to pay. Can you suggest me other options available for me? Yes it does... there are a few places nearby but I would recommend living in the furnished Yale accommodation if you dont know anyone in the city. It's not a very safe city and you might get a cheaper room in the wrong neighbourhood.
